Education in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone, officially called the Republic of Sierra Leone is a country located in western region of Africa. Guinea, Liberia and the Atlantic Ocean form the boundaries of Sierra Leona.

Sierra Leone experiences a tropical climate because of its geographical diversity comprising of savannahs and rainforests. The dry season and the rainy season are the only two seasons of Sierra Leone. The average high and low temperatures are 36 degrees and 16 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The Education System of Sierra Leone follows an average of 9 years of compulsory education but because of the lack of funds and resources, it is not necessarily followed. Two thirds of the country is illiterate and after the Sierra Leone Civil War, efforts have been made to reconstruct schools and provide more opportunities for children, especially in the primary and secondary levels.

The education system of Sierra Leone is divided into four stages:
  • Primary education- Six years
  • Junior secondary education- Three years
  • Senior secondary education OR Technical vocational education-Three Years
  • University Education- Four years (towards bachelor's degree programme.
